We would love to have you join us for worship! One of the ways we seek to love our neighbors is through practicing hospitality. Open Door Presbyterian Church is a community of people who love Jesus and seek to follow him with our lives. We worship together, pray together, eat together, serve together, learn together, and wrestle honestly through questions together. The way of Jesus stretches us in countless ways, and it can be challenging, but we get to do it together. We believe that this process of following Jesus calls us at once closer with him and with one another, even (especially) as we encounter the many ways we are different from one another. Because of this, we delight in the broad diversity of humanity, and we long to see the promise of God’s kingdom come to fruition, where people worship together from “every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages.”

Open Door is a church plant. As a group, we felt called to begin a new church that could reach those that might not feel comfortable in existing church structures - a church that honors questions, that embraces the work of reconciliation and unity across cultural and theological boundaries, that values the work of men and women equally at every level of church leadership, and that is committed to living alongside one another. We met for our first unofficial worship service on Easter 2023, and we had our official launch service in September 2024. We look forward to what God is going to do as we move into the future!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our worship is contemporary and liturgical. Our singing is led by a small praise team, incorporating both songs and hymns. We incorporate liturgical readings into our worship as a way to express important truths as one body, and to hear God’s message of grace. For example, we confess our sins together and receive God’s pardon, affirm our faith in the ancient creeds of the church, and hear God’s word of blessing to us to end the service. The service lasts around an hour and a half.

  • Most people dress casually, and the atmosphere of the church, while reverent, is fairly relaxed. But, wear what seems right to you!

  • We are passionate about helping our kids grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus! We have a children’s sermon every Sunday, teaching through Biblical stories and what they tell us about God. We worship with children and adults together, especially during the songs and liturgy. During the sermon, there are volunteers who can help watch younger children while they play. We encourage our kids to engage alongside their parents and other adults in worship, Bible study, serving the community, prayer, and all sorts of other ways as they are able.

  • Eating together is one of the most important ways people build meaningful relationships. It’s a time to enjoy delicious food, to have good conversations (whether they’re super deep or just fun) and to become the kind of family that Jesus called us to be.

  • Yes! We are part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. You can find out more about the EPC here.

  • A church plant is a new church that is started to serve a particular area or need. Church plants are a great place to build your faith, since they give lots of opportunities to get involved and to develop meaningful relationships with people at various stages of faith. You can read more about our goals as a church plant in Our Story above.

  • We are thrilled to meet for worship at Network of Community Ministries. Network serves neighbors in Richardson in many ways, and we love that we get to volunteer with them, and to worship in a place that reflects such deep care for the community. As a church plant, we do not own our own building. While we are not part of Network (we rent space on Sundays), Network has already begun to feel like home!

  • We are committed to doing everything we can to be a good church home for you and your loved ones, including making whatever accommodations are helpful for particular needs. While we do not have all of the resources of bigger churches, we have the flexibility to work with you to come up with good solutions. We always have available tools and toys for those who find the sensory experience overwhelming (although we intentionally keep the sound and lighting at levels that are generally comfortable for all). The building we worship in is ADA compliant. If you have any questions or want to see if we can accommodate a particular need, please let us know here.

  • Jesus told us that “my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Our goal as a church is not to lay a heavy burden on you, financially or otherwise. At the same time, the life Jesus calls us into is one of rich generosity. We want you to believe in the work and worship of the church so strongly that you want to support it, and to love your neighbor (inside or outside the church) so deeply that you want to share with them generously.

  • We are a Presbyterian church. That word carries a lot of meaning, doctrinally and historically, but the word itself means that we are a church led by elders. The pastor does not hold all the power. The elders (referred to as a group as the session) are responsible to the presbytery (all the elders from different churches in a particular area), which is responsible to the general assembly (all the elders in the denomination). Why all these groups? Because Jesus cares about his church, and because leaders need to be both helped and held accountable by others. Elders are elected based on their maturity, both in biblical understanding and in a Christ-like way of living, as set out in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Our church holds an egalitarian view, meaning that all roles in the church are open to men and women alike (to read more on this topic, we recommend Men and Women in Christ by Andrew Bartlett, and Man and Woman, One in Christ by Philip Payne).
